The Sioux City Symphony in Iowa has announced Patrick O'Malley as their Composer of the Year for 2018. The symphony will be performing "Loneliness in a Beautiful Place" alongside works by Respighi, Debussy, and Hovhaness.
O'Malley will be recording a short orchestral work with Los Angeles studio musicians while studying conducting with film music composers William Ross and Conrad Pope.
O'Malley will receive an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer award along with several other talented young composer at a ceremony at Lincoln Center, NY.
O'Malley will compose a new chamber piece for the Music from Copland House ensemble. The fellowship takes place on June 5-11th, with a final concert given on June 11th.
O'Malley was selected from a national call for scores for a performance of his chamber music.
O'Malley's orchestral work Aurora will be performed by the NIS Youth Orchestra on May 21st in Hammond, In.
The orchestral work Even in Paradise was named an honorable mention in Illinois State University's RED NOTE music festival competition. The piece was chosen out of a pool of 130 orchestral works.
Arranged for string orchestra and premiered by USC Thornton Musicians, conducted by O'Malley, at Alfred Newman Recital Hall.
