program note
Marci Vogel’s collection, entitled Your toungue in the language of a stranger, is comprised of poems all very short in length and abstract in character – her focus more on the interplay of the sounds of words, rather than constructing a concrete narrative or situation. In my attempt to create a piece from her work, I combined poems from this collection that all contained similar images and themes.
The music begins and ends with a graveyard scene, the piano and guitar creating bizarre effects to accompany the singer’s declarations. The lengthy middle section is far more consonant – snapshots of a woman’s memories are presented, creating a stark contrast between images of her life and the austerity of her burial ground.
