Program Note

As I started writing a set of pieces for solo oboe, I noticed a strong tendency for my melody writing to outline various harmonic structures, such as chords and scales, instead of just being completely independent lines. This suggested the title. The individual movements are conceived as little vignettes in which ideas that could conceivably form longer pieces only last a short time, again suggesting only a partial picture. As such, the pieces should feel very dream-like - a parade of clear but partial images.

My original goal for Outlines was to compose music that would explore the charming and mysterious qualities of the oboe, after having written a handful of darker, more involved pieces over the previous year. I have since transcribed the work for various other instruments, making subtle changes to fit each instrument's idiomatic differences. A few words on the movements:

I. A Tune - a simple melody repeated, gradually descending to the instrument's low range, and disappears.

II. Awaywe - setting off for a brief, but much needed, journey outside.

III. Walk/Watch - strolling aimlessly, until something catches your attention and the rest of the world melts away. Eventually the fixation breaks, and one continues on.

IV. Parasparks - a bit of fun; playing and stumbling.

V. Lost Before Time - a sad song, but thankful for the beautiful things we have.
